Workbench Overview
GENESIS provides a set of tools to design and deploy an automation application. One of the most important tools is Workbench, where you can manage the application's configuration.
Workbench is a centralized project configuration management tool for automation applications. Each configuration is associated with a provider, a component that provides a set of features to Workbench or integrates with third-party services.
These are some examples of components (providers):
- Assets: Makes the application location-aware in a plant.
- Databases: Allows GENESIS to interact with different databases such as SQL Server or Oracle.
- Alarm Server: Provides an alarm infrastructure to GENESIS.
- Data Historian: Provides an infrastructure to collect and store historical data.
- Data connectivity providers that allow GENESIS to interact with various types of devices, such as OPC UA, BACnet, or Mitsubishi Electric FA.
- Reports: Provides an infrastructure to generate reports.
The table shows an overview of available Workbench features.
Feature |
Description |
---|---|
Project Creation |
A project in GENESIS represents a SCADA application composed of a collection of components (features, server applications, or, in general, any part of the application that needs to be configured). Learn more Workbench provides two workflows to create a new project, the Quick Project Wizard, and the Advanced Project Wizard. Learn more |
Update Applications |
The Update Applications mechanism in Workbench updates the GENESIS license per component. It is used to adequate a SCADA application (a project) with the available components. Learn more |
Application Settings |
The Configure Application(s) Settings feature in Workbench allows you to customize various project settings. Learn more |
SQL Configuration |
GENESIS configuration is managed by one or more SQL Server instances. The SQL configuration allows you to manage SQL Server instances and connections in Workbench. Learn more |
Database Management |
GENESIS relies on Microsoft SQL Server to store and manage configuration database information. Learn more You can use the database management options in Workbench to edit the configuration or upgrade, back up, restore, or delete a database. Learn more |
Certificates |
Workbench allows you to view and use the certificates that have been added to GENESIS. Learn more |
Security |
The Security component in Workbench provides a number of mechanisms to manage user access. Learn more |
Windows Service Configuration |
The Configure Services feature allows you to manage the ICONICS and other Windows services directly in Workbench. Learn more |
File and Configuration |
The File Configuration feature allows you to map remote file paths into project configurations and use them in several configurations among all the components used in a project. Learn more |
Task Folder Configuration |
Workbench has an embedded task engine that allows executing asynchronous jobs. The task folder configuration sets the path for storing the task-related data. Learn more |
Access to External Tools |
Workbench can access a number of external applications that can help you with the configuration and of a project. Learn more |
Import and Export Configuration |
You can import and export configuration data of any component that provides a service or a function. Learn more |
Pack and Go |
Pack and Go operations are similar to import/export operations but they apply to the entire project. Learn more |
