Starting TraceWorX Logging

This section provides an introductory tutorial on getting started with TraceWorX logging. Enabling logging in TraceWorX is the vital first step to gathering diagnostic information and troubleshooting your project.

To set up logging in TraceWorX:

  1. Open Workbench and on the Tools ribbon, click TraceWorX to open Trace Configuration and Log Viewer. Alternatively, you can use the Windows Start menu to open the TraceWorX Configurator application in GENESIS Tools.

  2. In the Category column, find the application or service that you want to diagnose.

  3. In the Trace Level column, click the cell corresponding to the desired component and select the logging level from the drop-down list.

For more information on choosing the appropriate trace logging level, refer to Trace Levels.

  4. When finished, click Save Changes. The logging starts automatically.

  5. To verify that the desired runtime activity is traced, click Refresh.

The log file size updates automatically every 10 seconds. The Refresh button updates the entire table immediately.

If any information has been logged, the log file's size in the Current Log column should change.

If the log does not change, try the following:

    • Verify that the service or application corresponding to the log is running.

    • Refresh again.

    • Lower the trace level.

  6. To view or manage the logged information, find the desired component in the Category column and click in the corresponding field of the Current Log column. This opens the Trace Viewer and allows you to view the data stored in your new log file. Learn more

Closing the Trace Configurator will neither turn off the logging nor clear any logs you may have created. To delete a log file, select Delete Log in the Current Log options, and to turn off logging entirely, set the Trace Level back to None.
