Configuring an SNMP Network
GENESIS integrates an SNMP NMS (Network Management Station) through its point manager. You can configure the SNMP network in Workbench, and then discover properly configured devices with SNMP agents. The SNMP network configuration in Workbench must match the device properties such as the read community and the SNMP protocol version.
To configure SNMP in Workbench:
- Enable the SNMP point manager.
- Open Workbench and select your project in the Project Explorer.
- On the Home ribbon, click Configure Services.
In the Available Services grid, navigate to ICONICS SNMP Point Manager and check the Status column. If the status is Stopped, click the semaphore in the first column on the left to start the service.
When the point manager is active, the semaphore turns green and the status column indicates Running.
-
In the Project Explorer, expand Data Connectivity > SNMP > Networks, and then do one of the following to display the network configuration dialog.
- Double-click Default Network to configure the default SNMP network that is created when installing GENESIS.
- Right-click Networks and select Add Network to add a new SNMP network.
-
In the Discovery Settings section in Discovery Type, select one of the following options, and then select or manually enter the required information.
- Broadcast: Searches SNMP devices/agents through a broadcast address.
- IP Address Range: Searches SNMP devices/agents through a range of IP addresses.
- Single IP Address: Searches SNMP devices/agents through a single IP address.
- Subnet: Searches SNMP devices/agents through a subnet mask.
-
In SNMP Settings, configure the SNMP NMS embedded in the SNMP point manager by setting up the following properties.
- Network Adapter: Defines the network interface used by the NMS embedded in the SNMP point manager.
- Read Community: Defines the read community of the NMS embedded in the SNMP point manager.
- SNMP Version: Defines the SNMP protocol version of the NMS embedded in the SNMP point manager.
- Read Timeout in seconds.
- SNMP server Port and Trap server port number.
- This is the Default Network: When selected, it sets this network as default. The default network is kept for compatibility with previous versions of GENESIS.
- Receive SNMP Traps from all devices in this Network: Allows the SNMP point manager to consume SNMP traps.
- When finished, click Apply & Close and continue with discovering the SNMP devices/agents.
