Setting Up the SQL Query Engine After Upgrading SQL Server

When SQL Server 2025 is installed together with GENESIS and the SQL Query Engine, it is automatically configured to use the SQL Query Engine. However, if you upgrade an existing SQL Server instance to SQL Server 2025, you must perform some additional steps before the SQL Query Engine can be used.

Before enabling the SQL Query Engine on an upgraded SQL Server instance, verify the following:

  • An existing SQL Server instance has been upgraded to SQL Server 2025.

  • You have administrative rights on the machine where SQL Server is running, so that you can add features and run the Configure System application.

To enable the SQL Query Engine on an upgraded SQL Server:

  1. Run the SQL Server 2025 installation application. You can use an installer available from Microsoft, or use the installer found on the GENESIS ISO after mounting it, under \Dependencies\SQLEXPRx64ENU.exe.

  2. In the Installation Center, select New SQL Server standalone installation or add features to an existing installation.

  3. Continue through the setup prompts. On the Installation Type page, click Add features to an existing instance of SQL Server 2025 and select the desired instance.

  4. Continue through the setup prompts. On the Feature Selection page, select the AI Services and Language Extensions check box.

  5. Continue through the setup and allow it to complete the additional feature installation.

  6. In the Windows Start menu, expand GENESIS Tools and open the Configure System application. Proceed through the steps to allow it to configure and install the necessary SQL Query Engine components.
