Configuring Gmail SMTP Overview

You can configure various GENESIS components to send notifications via email messages using Gmail. The functionality is affected by Google's update of its security requirements for sending email messages. Learn more

The GENESIS components that can send emails include:

  • Alert Notifications and Connected Field Service
  • Reports and Reports email redirector
  • Bridging and Bridging email activity

When selecting the email account name, verify that it clears spam and junk mail filters.

To use this functionality, you need to set up one of the following authentications:

  • Creating an App Password (easier but less secure solution)

You can configure and use an App Password to sign into your Gmail account from GENESIS. An App Password is a 16-digit passcode that gives a non-Google application or device permission to access your Google account. You must turn on the 2-step verification to use the app password. For more details and setting instructions, refer to https://support.google.com/mail/answer/185833?hl=en-GB.

  • Creating a Google OAuth2 account (more secure solution)

You can create an OAuth2 account to access Google APIs. It also provides a client ID and client secret to use with the account for a secure authentication. For more details and setting instructions, go to https://developers.google.com/identity/protocols/oauth2 and click the Google API Console link. Learn more

You can use any of the two authentication methods. The default setting is Application Password. You can change that in the Gmail configuration file. Learn more
