Grace Periods

There are two different places where the licensing communication could be lost and where a grace period may apply. Either the license source could have an issue, or communication to a remote license could be disrupted.

Source Grace Period

Hardware or Cloud

For hardware or cloud licenses, if the license source were to be removed or have an issue, there is a grace period before the Native Licensing service would start reporting that the license is gone. Causes of this may include:

  • Hardware key was removed.

  • Network communication was lost to the ICONICS cloud license server.

The grace period that applies in this case varies per source type.

  • Hardware license: 64 hours

  • Cloud license: 30 days

This grace period cannot be changed by the user.

The grace period shown in the license viewer is the source grace period.

When this grace period is in effect, the license status in the license viewer will show as License Failing.

Software

For software licenses, license recovery mode replaces the source grace period. If a software license is lost for any reason, it will continue to run as previously licensed for up to 30 days while the problem is resolved.

For more information, see Software License Recovery

Remote license grace period

If FrameWorX is connected to a remote license, there is an additional grace period that comes into effect if FrameWorX loses connection to the remote licensing server. Causes of this may include:

  • Remote Native Licensing service crashed

  • Network communication was lost to a remote licensing server

This grace period is 2 hours, by default, and the maximum is 24 hours. It can be changed in Platform Services Configuration on the Licensing tab. It can also be disabled from this dialog.

This grace period is handled independently from the client grace period or software license recovery mode.

This grace period is not displayed in the license viewer. If communication to the remote license server has been disrupted, the license monitor will show unknown status. However, the system will still work as if licensed.
